Sources of Economic Indicators

A variety of organizations produce useful economic indicators. Indicators are produced by government agencies, private trade groups, private nonprofit groups and businesses. Some businesses, such as auto manufacturers and retail chain stores, have enough economic impact that their normal reporting is often considered an economic indicator. Additionally stock indexes and trade volume from the stock exchanges and over the counter trades may be considered economic indicators. In the field of government, central banks are a special case as they often compile economic statistics and are also prime movers in the economy; in fact, their role as consumers of economic data is one of the reasons data can have such a big impact on the day-to-day movement of markets.
