HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PRELIMINARY REPORT ON MANUFACTURERS’ SHIPMENTS, INVENTORIES, AND ORDERS
Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in June, up four consecutive months, increased $7.6 billion or 1.7 percent to $457.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.9 percent May increase. Shipments, up five of the last six months, increased $7.2 billion or 1.6 percent to $454.6 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.3 percent May increase. Unfilled orders, up twenty-eight of the last twenty-nine months, increased $7.1 billion or 0.9 percent to $817.4 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.9 percent May increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 5.32, down from 5.33 in May. Inventories, up nine of the last ten months, increased $5.5 billion or 1.0 percent to $554.3 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.6 percent May increase. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.22, down from 1.23 in May.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up two consecutive months, increased $1.6 billion or 0.8 percent to $215.3 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.1 percent May increase.
New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased $6.0 billion or 2.5 percent to $242.3 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, up two of the last three months, increased $1.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $212.2 billion, revised from the previously published 0.5 percent increase. This followed a 1.2 percent May decrease.
Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up four consecutive months, increased $6.0 billion or 2.5 percent to $242.3 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 1.7 percent May increase. This increase was led by petroleum and coal products, which increased $3.8 billion or 5.7 percent to $70.4 billion. Petroleum and coal products was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up twenty-eight of the last twenty-nine months, increased $7.1 billion or 0.9 percent to $817.4 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.9 percent May increase.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, up eleven of the last twelve months, increased $1.7 billion or 0.5 percent to $332.2 billion, unchanged from the previously published increase. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.5 percent May increase.
Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, up seven of the last eight months, increased $3.8 billion or 1.7 percent to $222.2 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.8 percent May increase. Petroleum and coal products led the increase, up $3.7 billion or 9.1 percent to $43.9 billion. Petroleum and coal products was also at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992.
By stage of fabrication, June materials and supplies increased 0.8 percent in durable goods and 0.8 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process increased 0.5 percent in durable goods and decreased 1.8 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods increased 0.2 percent in durable goods and 3.9 percent in nondurable goods.
