UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 384,000, unchanged from the previous week’s revised figure of 384,000. The 4-week moving average was 378,250, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 376,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 14, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week’s unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 14 was 3,139,000, an increase of 82,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,057,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,103,250, an increase of 7,500 from the preceding week’s revised average of 3,095,750.

The fiscal year-to-date average for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment for all programs is 2.909 million.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 354,777 in the week ending June 21, an increase of 5,577 from the previous week. There were 292,583 initial claims in the comparable week in 2007.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,856,654, an increase of 56,815 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,278,797.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June 7.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,218 in the week ending June 14, an increase of 46 from the prior week. There were 1,481 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 132 from the preceding week.

There were 11,218 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 7, an increase of 374 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,171, a decrease of 722 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 7 were in Puerto Rico (4.4 percent), Alaska (3.2), Oregon (3.1), Michigan (3.0), California (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), Rhode Island (2.8), Nevada (2.7), and Arkansas (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 14 were in Pennsylvania (+4,284), Wisconsin (+1,783), Michigan (+1,320), Florida (+1,258), and Maryland (+1,225), while the largest decreases were in Kentucky (-5,090), Georgia (-5,083), Missouri (-2,753), Texas (-2,664), and New York (-2,379).
