NEW RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION IN AUGUST 2007
The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly announced the following new residential
construction statistics for August 2007:
BUILDING PERMITS
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,307,000.
This is 5.9 percent (±1.4%) below the revised July rate of 1,389,000 and is 24.5 percent (±1.3%) below the revised August 2006
estimate of 1,731,000.
Single-family authorizations in August were at a rate of 926,000; this is 8.1 percent (±1.2%) below the July figure of 1,008,000.
Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 324,000 in August.
HOUSING STARTS
Privately-owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,331,000. This is 2.6 percent (±7.3%)* below
the revised July estimate of 1,367,000 and is 19.1 percent (±6.5%) below the revised August 2006 rate of 1,646,000.
Single-family housing starts in August were at a rate of 988,000; this is 7.1 percent (±5.5%) below the July figure of 1,063,000. The
August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 311,000.
HOUSING COMPLETIONS
Privately-owned housing completions in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,523,000. This is 0.2 percent (±11.0%)*
below the revised July estimate of 1,526,000 and is 19.0 percent (±7.6%) below the revised August 2006 rate of 1,881,000.
Single-family housing completions in August were at a rate of 1,249,000; this is 3.4 percent (±10.6%)* above the July figure of
1,208,000. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 254,000.
